Prototypes of BMW’s forthcoming M5 Touring have been observed during trial runs, marking just the third M5 estate in the esteemed lineage of the 5-Series. Its predecessor was the E60-era M5 Touring from the previous decade.

This newest iteration of the dynamic estate is slated for an imminent unveiling, concurrently with the introduction of the fresh M5 sedan, and BMW has affirmed in April that both variants are slated to reach the U.S. market. Expectations are they will be introduced as 2025 models.

Although the test mules may bear resemblance to previous demonstrators of the conventional 5-Series Touring, distinct M characteristics like the enlarged wheel arches, a quartet of exhaust outlets, and substantial wheels and brake gear unmistakably identify these as part of the M5 Touring line.

A cautionary decal in yellow further validates that these prototypes are configured with a hybridized propulsion system. The likely composition includes a 4.4-liter V-8 with dual turbochargers paired with a single electric unit, delivering a consolidated force exceeding 700 hp. That identical system is employed in the 2023 XM SUV, generating 738 hp in its top-tier XM Label Red variant.

Enthusiasts eager for electrification are catered to with the newest 5-Series model. The all-electric i5 version is available in the powerful i5 M60 xDrive configuration that boasts a twin-motor, all-wheel drive design with an output of 590 hp. The i5 M60 xDrive offers an estate model as well, though it’s not anticipated to enter the U.S. market.</.down>

Fully electric powertrains destined for M vehicles are in development, yet their launch schedule is opaque. Testing of a novel four-motor electric propulsion system by BMW M has been witnessed, and there are whispers that at some juncture during its life cycle, the novel M5 might present an option for an all-electric drivetrain.

Upon its introduction, the M5 Touring will encounter minimal direct rivalry. Mercedes-Benz AMG has ceased offering the E 63 Wagon stateside, and Audi’s incumbent RS 6 Avant is nearing its end of production. While a successor to the RS 6 Avant, presumably named the RS 7 Avant, is on the horizon, it’s unconfirmed for the U.S. market. An RS 5 Avant in development also remains unconfirmed for distribution in the U.S.
