The Renault 5 isn’t the sole legendary nameplate that Renault is set to bring back for the electric age.
A modern rendition of the Renault 4 is also on the horizon, and a prototype has recently been seen once more.
The original 4, widely recognized as the 4L, was manufactured for over 30 years, with production concluding in 1994. Offered in numerous body styles, primarily as a four-door hatchback, the 4 holds an important place in Renault’s legacy, much like the 5, making the revival of this nameplate expected.
The contemporary version, which is expected to carry the name 4 E-Tech to indicate its electric drivetrain, will be a subcompact crossover. Its design was first unveiled at the 2022 Paris auto show through the 4Ever Trophy concept, although the styling of the production version has been somewhat refined compared to the more rugged appearance of the concept.
The concept had a length of 163.8 inches, and the production model is anticipated to be of similar dimensions, which means it will be larger than the 5 E-Tech, measuring 154 inches long, and only slightly longer than a Mini Cooper.
The 4 E-Tech will utilize the same CMF-B EV platform utilized by the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance that the 5 E-Tech is built on. Renault has created an affordable, unique variant of this platform known as the AmpR Small.
For the Renault 5 E-Tech, customers will be able to choose between 40- and 52-kwh battery options, paired with respective electric motors offering 120 hp and 150 hp. The 4 E-Tech is expected to feature similar choices, with the possibility of an all-wheel drive dual-motor configuration as well.
Anticipate the 4 E-Tech to make its debut at the 2024 Paris auto show in mid-October. Following that, sales in regions where the French automaker operates are likely to commence soon after, with prices expected to begin higher than the intended 25,000 euros (around $28,000) for the 5 E-Tech, which is scheduled to go on sale later this year.
