Subaru aims to capitalize on the renewed interest in hybrid vehicles with the upcoming release of the 2025 Forester Hybrid next year.
The automaker’s website already features an option to reserve the vehicle, confirming that deliveries will commence in the middle of next year.
In the U.S., Subaru hasn’t offered a hybrid vehicle since the Crosstrek Hybrid was discontinued at the end of 2023. While the brand has launched an electric vehicle named the Solterra, the introduction of the Forester Hybrid will signify its return to the hybrid market.
The Forester Hybrid will be built on the newly redesigned sixth-generation Forester, which was unveiled as part of the 2025 lineup earlier this year. Additionally, Subaru will continue to offer the previous-generation Forester Wilderness for the 2025 model year.

Prototype models of the Forester Hybrid have been photographed in camouflage. Insight from these prototypes suggests there will be minimal visual distinction between the hybrid and the standard model, aside from possible badging.
The powertrain is anticipated to feature a new system referred to as Subaru Strong Hybrid. This setup has already been introduced in the Crosstrek Hybrid in Japan, combining a hybrid-optimized version of Subaru’s recognizable 2.5-liter flat-4 engine with a more robust electric motor and battery compared to previous Subaru hybrids. The electric components were developed in collaboration with Toyota.
In the Crosstrek Hybrid released in Japan, the 2.5-liter flat-4 engine generates 158 hp independently, while the electric motor contributes 88 hp. The battery boasts a capacity of 1.1 kWh. Subaru has yet to disclose comprehensive specifications, but it has indicated that the new Crosstrek Hybrid will achieve approximately 20% better fuel efficiency than its predecessor and will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in two seconds less time.
Subaru enthusiasts have more exciting developments to anticipate. A revamped Outback has been spotted undergoing tests, and there are plans for a rugged Wilderness variant of the latest Forester in the near future.
