Subaru has provided hybrid variants of the Forester in various markets for several years, but an electrified edition of the well-liked compact crossover is set to make its debut in the U.S., with a prototype spotted for the first time.

This upcoming version is based on the sixth-generation Forester, which was introduced last year as a 2025 model. The new Forester Hybrid is expected to kick off sales next year as part of the 2025 lineup.

While Subaru confirmed the development of the Forester Hybrid during the unveiling of the standard Forester last year, they have shared limited information regarding its features.

However, it is anticipated that beneath the hood will be a new hybrid powertrain created in collaboration with Toyota. Mazda is also part of this partnership, which was announced earlier this year.

Dubbed by Subaru as a “Strong Hybrid,” this new powertrain has already been introduced in the Crosstrek Hybrid in Japan, combining a hybrid-optimized version of Subaru’s iconic 2.5-liter flat-4 engine with an electric motor and battery developed by Toyota.

In contrast to Subaru’s earlier hybrid systems, the electric motor in the Strong Hybrid setup produces significantly more power, allowing the vehicle to operate on electric power for extended periods and enabling the gasoline engine to function primarily in its most efficient ranges, sometimes acting solely as a generator. Power continues to be distributed to all four wheels through a mechanical all-wheel-drive system.

In the Crosstrek Hybrid released in Japan, the 2.5-liter flat-4 engine generates 158 hp while the electric motor provides 88 hp. The battery is rated at 1.1 kWh. Although Subaru hasn’t disclosed full specifications, they indicated that the new Crosstrek Hybrid will consume approximately 20% less fuel than its predecessor while achieving a 0-60 mph acceleration time that is two seconds faster.

The Forester Hybrid is not the only new variant expected in the Forester lineup. A more rugged Forester Wilderness model is also anticipated to be added soon. Similar to its predecessor, this new version is likely to feature increased ground clearance and off-road tires.
