The updated 2025 Toyota 4Runner, which debuted in April, is expected to arrive at dealerships early next year. Toyota announced on Tuesday that the base price will begin at $42,220, which includes a $1,450 destination fee. This reflects only a $65 increase compared to last year, even with significant upgrades.

The 2025 4Runner introduces a new platform, advanced technology, and offers a hybrid powertrain option, while still preserving the essential design elements and capabilities that have made the 4Runner a classic.

The introductory price applies to the 4Runner SR5 with rear-wheel drive. For most models where it’s not standard, such as the SR5, opting for four-wheel drive adds an additional $2,000.

The lineup for the 2025 4Runner includes an impressive selection of nine models. Besides the SR5, the options comprise the familiar TRD Sport ($48,700), TRD Off-Road ($50,640), TRD Sport Premium ($54,060), Limited ($56,850), and TRD Pro ($68,350). New additions include the Platinum ($64,310) and Trailhunter ($68,350) models, with all prices inclusive of destination charges.

The era of the well-known 4.0-liter V-6 has come to a close. All 2025 4Runners will now utilize a turbo-4 powertrain, with some models offering an electrified option either as standard or optional. The hybrid powertrain, known as i-Force Max, is an additional $2,800 on most variants where it can be chosen.

The base engine is a 2.4-liter turbo-4 producing 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid version, which is available on TRD Off-Road and Limited models and standard on TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum, combines the turbo-4 with an electric motor to deliver a total output of 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission is standard across all models.

The 4Runner has been updated, however, it has not compromised its off-road prowess.

The sixth-generation 4Runner is still a body-on-frame SUV, riding on a modernized frame. It now utilizes the TNGA-F platform, which it shares with models such as the Lexus GX, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Sequoia, as well as the Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks. Enhanced powertrains allow for up to a 6,000-pound towing capacity.

Entering the modern age, the 4Runner’s four-wheel-drive system is now electronically engaged via a switch. Most versions are equipped with a limited-slip rear differential, while the TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter models come with a rear locking differential. Interestingly, the high-end Platinum models have full-time four-wheel drive with a locking center differential as standard, an option for Limited models.
The 4Runner continues with its independent front suspension and coil rear springs, complemented by a solid rear axle. For TRD Pro models, 2.5-inch diameter Fox shocks with remote reservoirs are utilized to counter heat issues.

The new Trailhunter model features ARB Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged shocks with remote piggyback reservoirs. A comprehensive set of skid plates shields the underside of the Trailhunter from the front bumper back to behind the transfer case, protecting it during off-road encounters. Combined with 33-inch Toyo Open Country All Terrain tires, the Trailhunter achieves a 2.0-inch lift compared to standard 4Runners.

Toyota has also introduced a Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism, standard on both the Trailhunter and TRD Pro, which enhances suspension articulation. Additionally, to assist drivers during off-road activities, Toyota includes a Multi-Terrain Monitor that provides views from the front, rear, and sides of the vehicle while traversing challenging terrain.

With ground clearance reaching up to 10.1 inches, and approach and departure angles (on the TRD Pro and Trailhunter) maxing out at 32 and 24 degrees, respectively, the latest 4Runner presents a mixed bag for off-road enthusiasts. The previous generation capped off at 9.6 inches of ground clearance, while its approach and departure angles were still performing better at 33 and 26 degrees, respectively.

In contrast, the outgoing 4Runner is built on a shorter 109.8-inch wheelbase, while the new 4Runner boasts a 112.2-inch wheelbase, a change that is likely to enhance ride comfort. A newly available electronic disconnecting sway bar is designed to improve wheel articulation as well.

A glance at the 4Runner quickly reveals its identity as an SUV. While it maintains its signature look with protruding wheel flares, a lofty greenhouse, and strong front and rear profiles, the front now resembles the Tacoma. The shape of the headlights and grille is akin to that of the Tacoma, and the notably large chin spoiler found on non-off-road variants can be detached with nine bolts, although Toyota states this will impact fuel efficiency by 1 or 2 miles per gallon. The rear windows curve over the roofline as a nod to the original 4Runner, while the rear tailgate window electronically lowers into the tailgate for transporting longer items.

The Trailhunter and TRD Pro trims come equipped with Rigid LED fog lights seamlessly integrated into the front, along with a center-mounted LED light bar producing 10,000 lumens—approximately double the lighting output compared to the light bars on the larger Tundra and Sequoia. Depending on the specific trim, wheel sizes vary between 18 to 20 inches in diameter.

Inside, the dashboard closely resembles that of the Tacoma pickup, featuring an 8.0- or 14.0-inch touchscreen situated at the center for infotainment purposes. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard features. A 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster is standard, with higher-tier models offering a 12.3-inch display. Lower trims utilize more hard plastic surfaces, while the premium models incorporate soft-touch materials and leather accents.

Hybrid variants present a slightly more challenging experience when loading cargo, due to the increased liftover height caused by the battery placement. The rear seatbacks can be manually reclined for added comfort on long travels, and Platinum variants offer heated rear seats. A head-up display is available on select models. Additionally, the Trailhunter models come with a 2,400-watt inverter for power supply during off-road excursions.

All 2025 4Runner models come standard with advanced safety features, including automatic emergency braking, active lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is an optional feature.
