Volkswagen unveiled its latest Tiguan compact crossover for the U.S. audience on Wednesday.

Making its official appearance this week at the 2024 Los Angeles auto show, it is anticipated to commence sales next summer as a 2025 model. The latest iteration is lighter and more robust than its predecessor, with a significantly upgraded interior featuring a more premium ambiance.

    2025 Volkswagen Tiguan

Last fall, VW introduced the new Tiguan globally, and the North American version bears a strong resemblance to it. However, it does not offer the plug-in hybrid option available internationally, debuting solely with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Nevertheless, VW has suggested that a hybrid variant may be introduced later.

This 2.0-liter engine delivers 201 hp, which is an increase of 17 hp over the previous model’s turbocharged four-cylinder. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and comes with front-wheel drive as standard, with an all-wheel-drive option available. The FWD variant has a towing capacity of 1,500 pounds, while the AWD model can tow up to 1,800 pounds.

Beyond the enhanced power, the new Tiguan is approximately 170 pounds lighter than its predecessor, thanks to the incorporation of aluminum in certain suspension components and more high-strength steel in various body parts. VW claims that this reduction in weight improves fuel efficiency and acceleration, although specific performance metrics will be shared closer to the official launch.

While VW has not disclosed exact dimensions, it indicates that the wheelbase has experienced a slight increase, accompanied by a shorter rear overhang, which means that the previous model’s third row is no longer available. The vehicle is built on an updated version of its predecessor’s MQB platform, now known as MQB Evo, which supports electrified powertrains.

The interior showcases a significant upgrade in both technology and quality. Depending on the trim level, the Tiguan offers options like American walnut wood accents, quilted leather upholstery, and seats that can be heated, cooled, and even equipped with a massage feature. A standard 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster is complemented by an infotainment display, which measures 12.9 inches but can also be upgraded to a larger 15.0 inches. A head-up display is also on the list of available features. While many functions have been integrated into the touchscreen, some physical controls remain on the dashboard and center console, including a large rotary knob for volume that also serves as the control for drive modes and customizable “mood settings,” referred to as Atmospheres, which modify ambient lighting and sounds within the cabin.

Manufacturing will take place at VW’s facility in Mexico, with deliveries anticipated to commence in early summer. Pricing details will be announced as the market launch date approaches.
