BMW is preparing for a substantial refresh of the iX since the introduction of the electric midsize SUV in the 2022 model year.
A disguised prototype of the updated iX has been spotted once again, and this time, there is footage showing the prototype in motion. The video, sourced from Car Spy Media, was captured while the prototype underwent testing at Germany’s Nürburgring circuit.
The exterior alterations appear to be minimal. The headlights showcase new daytime running lights reminiscent of the latest BMW models. Furthermore, there is a fresh design for the taillights, in addition to new front and rear fascias. It wouldn’t be surprising if BMW includes an option for an illuminated grille, as seen in recent releases.
Although the interior isn’t clearly visible, it is likely that some enhancements are in store. We may expect to see technological features from BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse EVs integrated into the updated iX, such as advanced head-up display systems.
There is uncertainty regarding BMW’s plans for mechanical updates. An increase in range is feasible, especially considering BMW’s recent advancements in battery technology.
The iX is currently available in the U.S. in xDrive50 and M60 variants, and this is not likely to change with the update. Both of the current variants feature dual-motor all-wheel-drive systems that deliver 516 hp in the xDrive50 and 610 hp in the M60. They are equipped with a standard 110.4-kwh battery that already offers impressive range for an electric midsize SUV. Both variants have EPA range estimates of approximately 300 miles.
The updated iX is expected to debut next year as a 2026 model in the U.S. This is also the time when BMW plans to introduce the first of its Neue Klasse EVs, a small crossover anticipated to be named iX3. Its design was previewed in March with the Vision Neue Klasse X concept.
There are speculations that the iX might be rebranded as an iX5 with the update, to connect it with a revamped X5 lineup that is expected around the same period. Prototypes for the new X5 have also been sighted.
