Ferrari is developing an electric vehicle scheduled for launch in late 2025, with a prototype having been sighted.

A prototype, or test mule, is an early version where engineers utilize a temporary body, often sourced from an already available vehicle, to encase the mechanical components of the new vehicle in progress.

For Ferrari’s EV, the engineers repurposed the body of a Maserati Levante for the prototype. The headlights were borrowed from Ferrari’s Roma coupe, while the exhaust outlets consist of dummy units to mislead observers. The uniquely shaped wheels are believed to be an aerodynamic design that may be featured in the final production.

While the prototype does not divulge much regarding the appearance of Ferrari’s EV, the integration of a Levante body implies that the EV will be an SUV—aligning with ongoing speculations. The Levante body was similarly employed for test mules during the development of Ferrari’s Purosangue SUV, and a Purosangue was photographed alongside the EV prototype.

Ferrari has not disclosed any specifics regarding its EV, aside from the late 2025 launch date and confirmation that manufacturing will commence in early 2026, at the new E-Building situated at Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters.

Over the years, Ferrari has filed patents for EV technology, including a recent one for a 3-motor powertrain that incorporates various methods for creating an emotional sound—one of the key attractions of Ferrari’s gasoline engine lineup.

As with its gasoline powertrains, Ferrari intends to create its own electric motors, inverters, and batteries while aiming for industry-leading metrics in weight and power density. The automaker will collaborate with partners in specific areas, especially concerning advanced battery technology like solid-state batteries, which Ferrari has previously mentioned is under consideration.

The projected price is rumored to begin above 500,000 euros (approximately $554,000). To address concerns regarding potential battery failures once the new vehicle warranty expires, Ferrari may introduce an extended warranty program that includes scheduled battery replacements, akin to its approach with plug-in hybrids.
