Mercedes-Benz is currently updating its GLE-Class lineup, and observers have spotted a prototype of the revised version of the GLE 53 Coupe from AMG.
Prior images showcased prototypes of the standard GLE-Class and standard GLE-Class Coupe. The upgraded series is set to hit the market in 2026, making it likely to debut as 2027 models in the U.S. This will mark the second upgrade for the GLE-Class. The existing range was initially introduced for the 2020 model year and received its first enhancement in 2024.
Mercedes typically refrains from updating its vehicles more than once within a product cycle, but the second revision will prolong the GLE-Class’s appeal, as Mercedes intends to retain some of its current petrol models on the market for an extended period. The larger GLS-Class is also expected to undergo a second revision to prolong its product life cycle.
The decision is influenced by a slower-than-anticipated demand for electric vehicles. Though Mercedes had planned to transition entirely to electric vehicles by 2030, the automaker announced in February that it would continue selling petrol-powered vehicles past that deadline. By keeping existing petrol models available for longer, Mercedes can observe the progression of the EV market and potentially prepare successors for certain petrol models that were not initially planned.
Regarding the updated GLE-Class and GLE-Class Coupe, including the GLE 53 version, observers noted camouflage concealment on the prototypes indicating new designs for the headlights, grille, and front fascia. Sections of the interior, such as the steering wheel and infotainment screen, were also obscured and are likely to be refreshed as part of the update.
Details on the mechanical updates remain unclear; however, Mercedes has confirmed that the GLE 53 and GLE 53 Coupe will receive a new plug-in hybrid powertrain for the 2026 model year, replacing the current mild-hybrid setup. This upgraded powertrain will combine a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 536 hp. The powertrain is expected to transfer unchanged to the revised GLE 53 and GLE 53 Coupe.
