Audi is approaching the unveiling of the third generation of its Q5 compact SUV, and to generate enthusiasm, the automaker has unveiled a teaser illustration showcasing the headlight design.
Audi has declared that the wraps will be taken off on Sept. 2, but sales are not predicted to commence until the following spring or early summer. The new Q5 is slated to debut as a 2025 model in the U.S.
Camouflaged prototypes have been observed undergoing testing in public for over a year. The standard SUV body style will be introduced initially, but a more coupe-like Q5 Sportback is also in the works.
The prototypes suggest that the new Q5 will exhibit a significantly more striking appearance than the relatively conservatively styled current generation. Nonetheless, the dimensions seem to remain approximately the same. The headlight featured in the teaser displays a pixel configuration for the daytime running light component, which may be customizable in certain markets, akin to what Audi launched in the Q6 E-Tron electric compact SUV.
The new Q5 is not an electric vehicle. It has been crafted around a Volkswagen Group framework recognized as the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), which made its debut in July with a new A5 hatchback. This platform accommodates hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, although the Q5 is not anticipated to showcase this at launch, at least in the U.S.
The powertrains for the U.S. market are expected to mirror those released for the new A5. This indicates a 2.0-liter turbo-4 in the Q5 alongside a 362-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 in the sportier SQ5. The sole gearbox is expected to be a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, with all-wheel drive also likely being standard in the U.S., consistent with the current generation.
Regarding the interior, the design will probably align with what Audi employs in the A5, featuring a curved panel tilted toward the driver inclusive of an 11.9-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.5-inch screen for the Android-based infotainment system.
The Q5 for North America is presently produced at Audi’s facility in Mexico, and the new generation is expected to be manufactured there as well.
