In a world where cherished memories can fade, restoring a beloved vehicle offers a compelling way to revive those moments, rolling back time and reviving a piece of history. This was the journey of Marvin DuBose from Lampassas, Texas, who discovered how skilled hands could revitalize his family’s old Chevy Apache. In the past, Marvin and his wife Kimmie were inspired by the work done by Cimtex Rods, a hot rod restoration shop just north of Austin, when they entrusted the team with the restoration of Kimmie’s 1964.5 Ford Mustang. The outcome was so impressive that the couple vowed they would return to Cimtex for their next project.
More than Restoration
The eventual project turned out to be the rejuvenation of the family’s 1959 Chevy Apache—a truck imbued with deep sentimental significance, as it had been driven by their son during his high school years. The DuBose family sought more than a straightforward restoration; they aimed to transform the Apache into something remarkable. Their vision was to create a truck that would turn heads on the roadway, merging its rugged, off-road essence with contemporary power and features. Their aim was not only to restore the vehicle but to create something that embodies both the nostalgia of the past and the innovations of the present.
Upgraded Off-Roader
With this vision in mind, Marvin once again approached Cimtex Rods, confident in their craftsmanship and expertise to turn his dream into reality. The team commenced by reinforcing the truck’s foundations, making sure to uphold its off-road capabilities while significantly improving its ride quality and reliability. They installed a complete Roadster Shop chassis system, providing a robust, modern base for the build. For enhanced handling, Cimtex outfitted the Apache with robust sway bars at both ends and incorporated full 14-inch Wilwood big brakes to ensure that the taller, more powerful truck could stop swiftly and safely.
Equipped with 20×10 Fuel Offroad Clash wheels and 37×11.5R20LT E 128Q Nitto Ridge Grappler all-terrain tires, the Apache’s posture became markedly more aggressive. The hybrid all-terrain and mud-terrain capabilities of these tires were perfect for a vehicle that would primarily be driven on pavement but would also experience occasional off-road adventures. These enhancements gave the Apache a commanding presence, poised to conquer any terrain while looking striking on the highways.
Engine Transformation
Cimtex did not stop there. The centerpiece of the build was the engine—a 2019 supercharged LT4 crate engine paired with an 8L90-E transmission, both part of a GM Connect & Cruise package. This combination was selected for its straightforward installation and the assurance that all parts were perfectly compatible. With 460 horsepower under the hood, the Apache evolved into a true powerhouse. The engine bay itself is a testament to fine craftsmanship, with shaved and bead-rolled paneling that creates an immaculate, sleek environment accentuating the powerful LT4.
Interior and Exterior Elegance
Once the mechanical upgrades were finished, Cimtex directed its focus to the truck’s exterior. Marvin envisioned allowing the Apache’s inherent, classic beauty to shine, leading the team to implement subtle yet impactful modifications. The body was painstakingly prepared for a new coat of pewter paint, a shade thoughtfully chosen by Kimmie to impart a fresh, unique look. To add contrast and depth to the paint job, Cimtex painted the grille, bumpers, and various accent elements black, resulting in a striking, two-tone appearance.
As the exterior evolved, the Cimtex team turned their attention to the interior, which required a complete overhaul to complement the truck’s sophisticated but rugged exterior. The objective was to craft a cabin that was both welcoming and stylish, with an air of sophistication. They began by covering the bench seat and custom door panels in distressed leather, infusing a touch of luxury into the interior. The freshly restored dashboard was fitted with Dakota Digital gauges, merging modern functionality with a vintage aesthetic.
A Family Legacy Revived
The transformation of the Apache took two years to complete, but the end result was nothing short of extraordinary. Every major system, from the chassis to the engine, was upgraded with cutting-edge components, ensuring that the truck was not only restored to its original splendor but also equipped for countless more years of service. Cimtex Rods succeeded in creating a vehicle that pays homage to the Apache’s history while ushering it into the future with modern technology and skilled craftsmanship.
For Marvin DuBose, the completed truck is more than just a vehicle—it is a revived family heirloom. The intense attention to detail, commitment to quality, and passion for craftsmanship exhibited by the Cimtex team culminated in a vehicle that will be admired and treasured for years to come. The Apache, once a representation of the past, has transformed into a lasting family legacy, showcasing the possibilities that emerge when skill, vision, and heart unite in the realm of custom automotive restoration.
