The latest Audi A5, which will be available next spring to replace both the existing A5 Sportback and the gasoline-powered A4, is officially designated by Audi as a sedan. However, this term is somewhat misleading, as the vehicle is essentially a hatchback—characterized by the combination of a sloping rear window and trunk lid that function as a single opening.
A true sedan model of the new A5 is indeed on the horizon, but it will be exclusive to China, where it will launch as the A5L. This model made its debut on Friday at the 2024 Guangzhou auto show.
The A5L serves as a long-wheelbase variant within the new A5 lineup, replacing the regular A5’s liftback design with a fixed rear window that only allows the trunk lid to open. The roofline has been modified to be less curved, enhancing headroom for those seated in the back. This approach mirrors that of the A7L, which premiered in China three years ago.
The A5L is measured at a wheelbase of 116.7 inches and has an overall length of 193 inches, while the standard A5 boasts dimensions of 114.1 and 190.1 inches, respectively. The additional length primarily benefits rear-seat passengers with increased legroom, a crucial aspect in China where longer vehicles are often favored for chauffeur services.
The A5L is set to be manufactured in China by Audi in partnership with local collaborator FAW.
In addition to the sedan variant, the new A5 will also include a wagon body style, although Audi has not specified whether this Avant version will be available in the U.S. The current A5 will not continue with coupe and convertible options in this new generation.
The Guangzhou auto show will continue until November 24. Additionally, Audi announced the initiation of its new China-exclusive AUDI brand during the event. This brand (displayed in all caps and without the four-ring logo) aims to focus on electric vehicles tailored specifically for the Chinese market, with an emphasis on connectivity and automated driving technologies. Starting from mid-2025, at least three models will be introduced under the AUDI name, with a concept vehicle unveiled in Guangzhou providing a glimpse into the future offerings.
