Audi Q6 E-Tron Off-Road Concept Review: A Bold New Rugged Electric Vehicle

On Thursday, Audi shared the initial images of an adventurous off-road concept based on the Q6 E-Tron electric crossover via social media.

The automaker revealed minimal information, affirming that the concept, named the Q6 E-Tron Off-Road, is equipped with portal axles, which provide it with an elevated and wide appearance. Unlike standard axles, the wheels are positioned lower than the axle center, connected by portal gears.

Mercedes-Benz has famously incorporated portal axles in various G-Class models in recent years. In the G-Class, these axles have facilitated a ground clearance of 13.8 inches, an approach angle of 41.3 degrees, a departure angle of 36.8 degrees, and a breakover angle of 42.0 degrees. While the specific details for the Audi concept remain uncertain, the prominent fender flares suggest it is built for significant wheel articulation.

Audi was seen evaluating a camouflaged variant of the Q6 E-Tron Off-Road concept last autumn, and questions remain about whether this concept is a precursor to a production model or a test vehicle for a new model, possibly a rugged SUV aimed at competing with the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Several years ago, Mercedes developed a robust EQC with modifications comparable to those seen here while creating the four-wheel-drive system for the electric G-Class.

Further information is expected to be revealed soon, potentially in time for the 2025 F.A.T. Ice Race, scheduled for February 1. This annual event, held at Austria’s Zell Am See airport, typically sees participation from one or more brands within the Volkswagen Group.

The Q6 E-Tron Off-Road concept is derived from the aerodynamically designed Q6 Sportback E-Tron body style. Currently, only the standard Q6 E-Tron model is available for order in the U.S. The vehicle is offered for the 2025 model year, with a starting price of $65,095, which includes a destination charge of $1,295.

The Q6 E-Tron is equipped with a standard 100-kWh battery and features a single rear motor with a power output of 302 hp (322 hp with launch control). Opting for all-wheel drive adds $2,000, increasing the total power to 422 hp (456 hp with launch control) through the inclusion of a front motor.

For those seeking enhanced performance, the SQ6 E-Tron variant is available, which comes standard with all-wheel drive and starts at $74,195, including destination charges. The SQ6 E-Tron produces 483 hp (509 hp with launch control) and boasts a remarkable 0-60 mph time of 4.1 seconds, with a top speed reaching 143 mph.
