The buzz around Kia’s refreshed EV6 has been palpable since its debut in South Korea this past May, but for many in the U.S., the real excitement kicked off just recently at the 2024 Los Angeles Auto Show. Here, we got our first official look at the version tailored to American buyers, right alongside the impressive launch of the high-performance EV9 GT. It’s clear Kia is carving out a significant presence in the electric vehicle (EV) space with these advancements.

The updated EV6 is set to hit the market in the first half of 2025 and will be produced at Kia’s facility in Georgia—marking a continuation of the brand’s push to domesticate its EV production. The original EV6 broke ground for Kia as their first dedicated electric vehicle, launching as a 2022 model, which was swiftly followed by the more powerful EV6 GT in 2023. The facelifted version of the EV6 will not only carry over the innovation but will also refine the existing EV6 GT for an even more thrilling ride.

As for changes, the exterior design reveals new headlights that align beautifully with Kia’s latest styling themes found in the EV9 electric SUV and the compact K4 sedan. This particular headlight design, dubbed the “Star Map,” adds a fresh and modern touch, giving the EV6 a more cohesive look within Kia’s latest offerings. If you’re a fan of aesthetics that catch one’s eye, you’ll certainly appreciate the subtle elegance.

While the rear-end of the car sees only minor updates—a new graphic for the curved taillight light bar—the front of the car is undoubtedly where the changes shine brighter. It’s that attention to detail that not only enhances the vehicle’s image but also helps it stand out in a crowded electric market.

Step inside, and you’ll notice Kia hasn’t skimped on creating an inviting and modern interior. With a newly designed steering wheel and twin 12.3-inch digital displays serving as both gauge clusters and an infotainment hub, it’s hard not to feel like you’re sitting in the cockpit of the future. Plus, the enhanced center console adds a touch of sophistication, while the additional sound insulation works wonders in quieting down any road noise. For those long trips, the whispers of the outside world won’t be a distraction.

In a strategic move that echoes modifications made to its sibling, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the refreshed EV6 introduces a more versatile battery lineup. The previous 77.4-kWh battery is being replaced with a standard 63 kWh battery, alongside a robust 84 kWh option. If you opt for that higher-capacity battery combined with rear-wheel drive, you can expect a generous driving range of up to 319 miles—ideal for road warriors or those who just like to drive without constantly searching for a charging station. Just keep in mind, that range dips a little when you add all-wheel drive into the mix.

For those who relish performance, the models with the 84 kWh battery offer several configurations: a single rear motor rated at 225 hp or dual motors that crank out an exhilarating 320 hp. The improved EV6 GT is where things get really interesting: equipped with the 84 kWh battery and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, it now pushes out an impressive 601 hp! And if you’re in the mood for a little extra thrill, you can temporarily boost that to a whopping 641 hp with the “GT mode.” If you’re a speed enthusiast, you’ll appreciate how Kia has turned up the dial from the previous 576 hp output in the earlier EV6 GT models.

Kia also seems to have its sights set on versatility. The updated EV6 boasts a towing capacity that has been bumped up to 2,700 pounds from the previous 2,300 pounds, which is a solid advantage for those who plan on hauling trailers or gear on weekend adventures. Plus, the vehicle’s smart technology can automatically gauge trailer weight and adjust the remaining range display accordingly—an added peace of mind when you’re out on the open road.

Lastly, charging is changing for the better with the inclusion of 800-volt technology, allowing for quick top-ups at DC fast-charging stations. The latest EV6 will now come standard with a NACS connector, making it easier to access numerous Tesla charging stations. This is a tremendous convenience that promises to make long trips even less stressful.

All of these enhancements come together to create a vehicle that not only stands out visually but offers a robust driving experience paired with advanced technology. Kia’s approach shows that they understand what drivers are looking for in an electric vehicle—it’s not just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about enjoying the journey and staying connected along the way. Whether you’re tackling everyday commutes or embarking on a spontaneous road trip, the refreshed EV6 appears poised to meet and exceed those expectations.
