Even though it bears the name 911, this vehicle bore little resemblance to the standard 911 model. Its creation focused on meeting the requirements for competition in the GT1 category of sportscar racing, mandating the production of a street-legal variant for homologation purposes.
The Porsche 911 GT1 departed from the conventional rear-engine configuration found in typical 911 models and embraced a mid-engine layout instead. Its distinguishing feature was its exclusive design as a racing vehicle, constructed specifically for that purpose rather than being a modified version of a standard car. With a twin-turbo flat-six engine, it achieved an impressive power output of 600 bhp. In 1996, the 911 GT1 set a speed record of 330 km/h (205 mph) on the iconic Mulsanne Straight.
