Can The 2025 Ram Heavy Duty Outperform Ford?

Whenever an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) delays vehicle redesigns, it tends to make its fans a tad restless. This is the situation for owners of heavy duty Ram trucks, whose vehicles have not seen significant changes for over a decade. While there have been some improvements like a stronger fully boxed frame, larger rear axles, and the introduction of a new 1,000 lb-ft torque Cummins engine option for Ram 2500 and 3500 models, the chassis, cab, and bed configurations have remained mostly unchanged since their initial launch in 2010. Are we about to witness a transformation for the 2025 models?

Buzz from Detroit, automotive rumors, and a historical analysis of Ram trucks lead us to predict exciting changes for the ’25 Ram 2500 or 3500. Expect updates to the front-end styling with a redesigned grille, significant interior enhancements, a switch to an eight-speed automatic transmission replacing the problematic 68RFE six-speed, a more powerful 6.7L Cummins diesel engine, and increased towing capacity. Ram might even aim to surpass Ford’s best-in-class 1,200 lb-ft torque and the leading 40,000-pound towing capacity. Brace yourself for a groundbreaking new workhorse from Ram.

Bidding Adieu to the 68RFE Transmission

Many Ram enthusiasts, especially those who favor the Cummins engine, will rejoice at the news of the Chrysler 68RFE transmission being phased out. Since its introduction in the ‘07.5 model year, this electronic six-speed automatic has faced numerous issues, particularly struggling with the torque output from the 6.7L Cummins engine. Even the addition of the “commercial grade” Aisin AS69RC automatic in 2013 for high-output Cummins models fell short of customer expectations. This holds especially true for Rams with enhanced horsepower and torque, a common upgrade among Cummins fans.

    8-Speed Transmission by ZF

Automotive enthusiasts are well aware of ZF Friedrichshafen AG’s reputation for producing robust transmissions, including various eight-speed automatics. There are strong indications that a diesel-specific version of the ZF 8HP75 (or equivalent) will be the go-to transmission for the ’25 heavy duty Rams, delivering efficient and dependable power transfer. ZF transmissions have proven their capability in handling torque levels well beyond their rated maximum in numerous applications. The current 8HP75 transmission, in use with the 6.4L Hemi, has shown remarkable durability. Expect the diesel-specific eight-speed in ’25 Rams to carry the moniker “ZF Powerline” or “PowerLine 8AT.”

Enhancements to the 6.7L Cummins Engine

Speculations are rife that a single Cummins engine option will be available in 2025, eliminating the need to choose between high output and standard models. The burning question remains – what will the unified power rating be? Will Ram and Cummins challenge Ford’s 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft torque on their high output 6.7L Power Stroke? While it might be unlikely for Ram to match Ford’s V8 horsepower, it wouldn’t be surprising to see figures around 450 hp. The peak torque rating is still up in the air, but expect it to comfortably exceed 1,100 lb-ft.

    A Fresh Chassis Design

If our predictions about a higher horsepower and torque Cummins engine come to fruition, this marks a significant step towards challenging Ford. However, to reclaim the best-in-class towing status, a revamped or substantially revised chassis will be necessary. The last major chassis overhaul occurred over a decade ago. Anticipate the ’25 Ram 2500 and 3500 to be equipped with thicker steel frame rails, a longer frame supporting additional wheelbase inches. This structural upgrade would put Ram on par with Ford and GM concerning length, allowing their short bed models to match or exceed Ram’s length by approximately 6 inches.

    Impressive Towing and Payload Capacities

With a 450 hp, 1,100 lb-ft Cummins-powered Ram heavy-duty model that’s longer and sturdier than ever before, the question looms – how much weight can a properly outfitted 3500 model tow and haul? Surpassing GM’s HD trucks is a given, but competing head-to-head with Ford’s F-450 for towing supremacy is the real challenge. Ford’s 40,000-pound towing capacity via gooseneck hitch is the target to beat. As for payload, exceeding Ford’s leading figure of 8,000 pounds could be within reach for Ram, given that its ’24 models already boast a hefty 7,680-pound hauling capacity in the bed.

    Revamped Interior

Ram has lagged behind its competitors in terms of interior offerings, necessitating an upgrade to match the gadgets and tech found in the newer DT generation (1500). Ideally, the ’25 Heavy Duty Rams should feature the 14.5-inch central Uconnect infotainment touchscreen, the 10.3-inch passenger side heads-up display, and the versatile 12.0-inch driver information screen seen in the 1500 models. By incorporating improved technology and premium materials in its upscale trims, Ram can win back its high-end truck customers.

    Redesigned Exterior

Ram enthusiasts have been waiting anxiously for a redesigned body, which didn’t materialize in 2019 or in the speculated 2023 model. However, as we approach the 2025 model year, the probability seems high. Prepare for fresh front-end styling featuring new headlights, a redesigned grille, updated front and rear bumpers, and possibly taillights similar to those on the new 1500 model trucks. While the cab material might remain steel with no mention of aluminum, expect a more spacious interior due to the anticipated longer chassis.

    Onboard Power Supply

With Ford and GM already incorporating onboard power supply for truck owners, it wouldn’t be surprising to find this feature in the ’25 Ram 2500 and 3500 models. Ram has already introduced it in the half-ton line for various purposes like powering tools, music, lights, or essential home appliances during power outages. This setup boasts two 110-volt power outlets and offers the flexibility of switching power sources with an optional 2-kilowatt inverter.

    History Repeats Itself

Ram has a track record of leading the pack. In the ’13 model year, the Auburn Hills manufacturer stunned the industry with a 3500 model that outperformed the competition, surpassing Ford’s F-450 in towing capacity. Fast forward to 2019, and Ram once again turned heads with the high-output 6.7L Cummins engine producing 1,000 lb-ft of torque, setting new benchmarks. Stay tuned for official updates from Ram later this year as they aim to push boundaries and redefine expectations.
