Mercedes-Benz AMG is moving forward with its plans to introduce a high-performance electric SUV that will stand apart from any models under the Mercedes-Benz umbrella.

Announced by AMG on Thursday, the independent SUV will be based on the brand’s proprietary AMG.EA dedicated EV platform and will fall into the full-size SUV category.

A teaser image unveiled during Thursday’s announcement suggests an aerodynamic, almost fastback silhouette with pronounced haunches.

AMG has previously released standalone models, including the current GT Coupe and SL Roadster, as well as the 4-Door GT Coupe. However, this will mark the first time in the company’s 57-year history that an SUV will be launched as a fully dedicated AMG model. In a statement, AMG chief Michael Schiebe noted that SUVs have become some of the most sought-after vehicles in the lineup, and the decision to create a standalone SUV is a direct response to that consumer demand.

The initial prototypes are slated to begin road testing this winter. While an official release date hasn’t been disclosed, earlier reports from April suggested that the unveiling could take place in 2026, indicating that the SUV might debut as a 2027 model in the United States.

This SUV will be the second model utilizing the AMG.EA platform, following a fastback sedan anticipated next year, which is likely to succeed the 4-Door GT Coupe. There have also been unconfirmed reports of a supercar being developed off the same platform.

AMG has indicated that the AMG.EA platform will feature various innovations for the brand, including axial-flux motor technology. In 2021, Mercedes acquired the British company Yasa, known for its high-performance electric motors, which will likely provide the axial-flux motors used in AMG.EA-based vehicles.

Axial-flux motors are generally lighter and more compact than standard radial-flux motors, providing similar power outputs. For example, a motor weighing slightly over 50 pounds can produce nearly 480 hp, and multiple units could be utilized. That said, manufacturing axial-flux motors is more complex compared to radial-flux motors, leading to higher production costs.

Beyond its motors, the AMG.EA platform is expected to leverage a high-performance high-voltage battery system, drawing from AMG’s expertise in Formula 1, particularly in energy discharge and recovery techniques, as well as possibly advanced cooling solutions.

The AMG electric SUV will face substantial competition upon its release. Aside from BMW M’s XM plug-in hybrid, Porsche is also working on an electric three-row SUV anticipated to launch in 2027.
