Porsche Taycan’s Upcoming Model Will Provide Enhanced EV Performance And Extended Range

It’s remarkable to consider that the Porsche Taycan platform has been in existence for 5 years already, particularly reflecting on my personal ownership experience of a 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S (from brand new) for a span of 2 years. Time truly does pass swiftly! In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed the car in terms of driving experience, yet there were some challenges when dealing with real-world scenarios. As a previous owner and Porsche enthusiast, I have closely followed the Taycan’s progression, as well as its position in the electric vehicle scene.

On the whole, Porsche has consistently elevated the Taycan across the years by enhancing performance and introducing new body styles like the rugged and utilitarian Taycan Cross Turismo. Depending on your location, the presence of EV infrastructure may or may not influence your decision, indicating that Porsche is fulfilling its commitment to advancing electric vehicles.

    Noteworthy Enhancements

This sentiment is particularly relevant at present, with Porsche recently disclosing details about the upcoming 2025 model year Porsche Taycan series. While not a complete overhaul, it appears that the 2025 Porsche Taycan will introduce some of the most significant revisions we’ve observed to the platform in a year-to-year comparison.

    Performance

Porsche has already unveiled power specifications for the top-tier Turbo S models, though further information on the remaining trims is still pending. The Turbo S model generates a robust 764 hp in standard driving mode—approximately 10 hp more than the previous year’s iterations—but there is also a new “push-to-pass” feature that momentarily boosts power to an impressive 857 hp for 10 seconds. This functionality is accessible in vehicles equipped with Performance Battery Plus and the Sport Chrono package.

While the name implies it is intended for overtaking on the highway (since 764 hp might not suffice), it begs the question of potential alternative uses. Engaging launch mode further elevates power, with an almost unbelievable 938 hp attainable for accelerating from 0-60 mph in under 2 seconds and beyond. Without disclosing additional specifics, Porsche also asserts that the upcoming base model (rear-wheel drive Taycan sedan) has trimmed its 0-60 mph time from 5.1 seconds to 4.5 seconds.

The Porsche Taycan will continue to exhibit its “repeatable performance” characteristics, ensuring consistent delivery of peak performance even under prolonged intense driving conditions, without entering a “limp mode” as the battery depletes. This attribute has set it apart from competitors, a distinction that remains valid.

    Range & Charging

For individuals not accustomed to an EV on a daily basis, these specifics might seem unexciting, if not entirely trivial. However, those grappling with range anxiety and cumbersome charging experiences will be thrilled with the enhancements Porsche has implemented in the Taycan regarding these aspects. As someone who comprehends this, I must emphasize that these are the most crucial and potentially revolutionary updates made to the platform thus far.

Testing of the latest 2025 Porsche Taycan prototype has unveiled substantial improvements in range, with the potential to cover up to 340 miles on a single charge. This represents a significant advancement, exceeding 100 extra miles of range compared to the 2024 models. High-end models like the Turbo S are anticipated to achieve slightly less, yet hitting 300 miles per charge is feasible, marking a substantial leap from the unimpressive (and EPA-rated) 201 miles of the 2020 variant.

I believe that charging durations have not been a concern for many Taycan owners, partially due to the reduced charging times resulting from previous models’ lower range cap, despite it not being the optimal way to market the feature. Nevertheless, the enhanced range now permits quicker charging times, with rates of up to 320 kW (increased from 270 kW) attainable at an 800-volt DC fast-charging station.

Consequently, the Porsche Taycan can now recharge from 10% to 80% in only 18 minutes, alongside the improved range and a 105 kWh gross Performance Plus battery capacity (up from 93 kWh). Similarly, the standard battery capacity has been upped to 89 kWh from 79 kWh. Porsche indicates that charging speeds are optimized for lower-speed solutions thanks to a novel on-board 150 kW DC-to-DC converter. There have also been enhancements in brake regeneration capabilities, with up to 400 kW rechargeable by decelerating from higher speeds.

    Subtle Revisions

    Enhanced Active Chassis Systems

For the first time, adaptive air suspension is now standard across all Taycan models. Moreover, Porsche Active Ride suspension can be specified for any of the all-wheel drive variants. This fresh 800-volt electrohydraulic system supplants the 48-volt motors system utilized in the previous Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control system. This allows any Taycan with this feature to further diminish roll while simultaneously compensating for pitch during acceleration and braking, thereby maintaining car balance during dynamic high G-force scenarios.

    Reduced Weight

While this version of the Taycan was never going to match the weight of an equivalently equipped ICE version of itself, it has managed to shed some mass. The new battery—despite being larger—consequently weighs 20 lbs. lighter than previous iterations, and a lighter rear motor additionally aids in reducing the Porsche Taycan Turbo S curb weight to 5,050 lbs. (down from 5,101 lbs.).

    Aesthetic Tweaks

Substantial work has been carried out beneath the surface, yet the 2025 model was not devised as a “re-design” by any stretch. In terms of external design language, the vehicle retains the same outline as its predecessors, with only a few discreet alterations necessitating closer scrutiny to discern. Examining closely will uncover a more sleek LED headlamp design and subtle modifications implemented on the front fascia and rear bumper. Turbo and Turbo S variants feature distinctive cues, including additional vents seamlessly integrated into the aforementioned areas. The front fenders have been reimagined to accommodate the universal styling updates.

The 2025 Porsche Taycan now features an illuminated Porsche logo embedded in the rear light strip as a standard feature on Turbo and Turbo S models, and potentially optional on other models. Moreover, fresh color choices have been introduced to differentiate the 2025 models from previous iterations. Within the cabin, new equipment packages offer amenities like Race-Tex and Pepita houndstooth patterns, with leather-free interiors as an available option across all Taycan models.

Including but not limited to a heated steering wheel, wireless smartphone charging, ambient interior lighting, and the Porsche Intelligent Range Manager as standard, the 2025 models also incorporate Apple CarPlay+, extending new attributes like climate control access without navigating in and out of the app, and authorization to operate the In-Car Video feature legally through the passenger display screen whilst in movement, with a unidirectional filter shielding the driver from viewing the screen. Video streaming is accessible on the central display when the vehicle is stationary.

The new 2025 Porsche Taycan sedan and Cross Turismo models are ready for ordering immediately, except for the GTS variant, which will be introduced later. Initial deliveries for US customers are forecasted for the third quarter of the 2024 calendar year.

The manufacturer’s recommended retail price (MSRP) for each existing 2025 Porsche Taycan model is as follows:

    – Taycan: $99,400
    – Taycan 4 Cross Turismo: $111,100
    – Taycan 4S: $118,500 / Taycan 4S Cross Turismo: $125,200
    – Taycan Turbo: $173,600 / Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo: $176,300
    – Taycan Turbo S: $209,000 / Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo: $211,700
