“Hotly anticipated” may often sound like a cliché, yet in the case of the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, it genuinely feels justified. Since its conception in 2021, this modern iteration of Renault’s beloved hatchback, once known in the U.S. as the Le Car, has practically ignited excitement among car enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike. Whether you have fond memories of the spunky Renault 5 or have seen glimpses of its legendary performance through the iconic Renault 5 Turbo, its comeback taps into a nostalgia that many of us share—especially now, in a time when electric vehicles (EVs) are swiftly taking center stage.

The original Renault 5 became a true icon in the automotive world, celebrated for its affordability, practicality, and appealing design. It was a mainstay on European roads for nearly 25 years, a symbol of everyday accessibility and charm. And now, as we eagerly welcome its electric revival, it strikes a chord with many who are all too aware of the shifts in transportation and the growing need for sustainable options. This isn’t just about introducing another vehicle; it’s about reviving something that once meant so much to countless drivers around the world.

In a landscape that has seen some retro revamps flop—like the relaunch of the Ford Capri—the question arises: can the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric do justice to its storied legacy? I’m delighted to answer with a resounding “yes.”

    What Is It?

At its core, the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is envisioned as a city car for the masses, a sensible blend of nostalgia and modernity. Sure, Renault might be a tad late to the retro party, with brands like Mini and Fiat already capitalizing on the classic car reboot trend. However, the Renault 5 concept car was a breath of fresh air in a market that was quickly becoming stale. It generated much-needed excitement and expectations for what a small EV could offer.

Its design is approachable, with a familiar aesthetic that instantly brings back memories. Plus, it’s competitively priced—starting at £22,995 ($29,800) in the UK—making it an appealing choice for many. There are two battery options available: a 40kWh variant producing 120 horsepower and a longer-range 52kWh car delivering a touch more gusto at 150 horsepower. Though the numbers might not be jaw-dropping compared to some high-performance electric models out there, they’re more than adequate for urban driving and everyday use.

    What Are The Specs?

For those considering a change, this car stands out not just for its price but for its specs. The entry-level model offers a respectable range of 192 miles (310 kilometers) on the European WLTP cycle, while the bigger battery option manages a solid 252 miles (405 kilometers). That means your day-to-day errands and weekly shopping trips shouldn’t pose a risk of running low on power—an increasingly important factor as we shift our focus away from internal combustion engines.

Both battery options allow you to zip from 0 to 62 mph in a leisurely 9 seconds or 7.9 seconds, respectively, and topping out at 93 mph means you can keep up with the flow of traffic without any worries. Charging speeds aren’t record-breaking, but they keep practicality in mind; a quick stop at a charging station can have you ready to hit the road in about half an hour.

    How Does It Drive?

I had the pleasure of driving the 52kWh model with the Techno trim, which strikes a fine balance between performance and comfort. Weighing in at just over 3,200 pounds, it feels relatively nimble for an EV. The thrill isn’t in bone-rattling acceleration but rather in enjoying a smooth, delightful ride through city streets. Acceleration is refreshingly modest, a quality that makes it relatable and user-friendly, especially in an automotive world where excessive power is often touted as the main draw.

The driving experience offers four selectable modes—Comfort, Sport, Eco, and Perso—allowing you to fine-tune the driving settings to your needs. During my time driving around town, I found the Comfort mode to be perfect for everyday driving, delivering a well-weighted steering response that made navigating tight corners feel effortless. The Eco mode is beneficial when you’re cruising through congested areas, though it sacrifices a bit of responsiveness. Sport mode adds a playful edge, making winding roads a joy to conquer, if only for a spell.

In urban settings, this car shines, merging practicality with charm. It’s small enough for easy parking, responsive enough to keep your daily commute enjoyable, and equipped to handle a week’s worth of trips without needing a charge—a genuine boon for busy lifestyles.

On highways, the 5 E-Tech is surprisingly smooth and regal. The ride quality is commendable, although it may toss a little feedback through the cabin over uneven surfaces—it’s important to remember that budget vehicles come with some trade-offs. If you decide to push it into Sport mode, you’ll likely find yourself chuckling; it strikes a balance between spirited driving and sensible efficiency.

It’s not a hot hatch, nor does it claim to be, but it has its own charm. This isn’t just any electric vehicle; it’s a celebration of the past, a promise for the future, and a relatable choice for today’s drivers. The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is more than a car—it’s a reminder that the journey to sustainable driving can also be a nostalgic and joyful experience.Renault has pulled out all the stops with the new 2025 Renault 5 E-Tech, giving the interior a thoughtful design that combines style with functionality. Instead of opting for a cookie-cutter layout filled only with screens to keep costs down, the cabin features playful shapes and engaging touches that evoke a sense of nostalgia while still feeling modern. Sure, the 10.1-inch touchscreen controls many features, but it’s more than just a pretty face. Powered by Google, and compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the infotainment system is incredibly user-friendly. You won’t find yourself fumbling around aimlessly; it’s as intuitive as using your smartphone.

When it comes to driving dynamics, the Renault 5 certainly doesn’t disappoint. The handling is zippy and responsive, offering a driving experience that can genuinely bring a smile to your face. You know that feeling you get when you were younger, cruising down the street with the windows down and the music up? That’s what this car delivers—fun and engaging in every twist and turn. And the price point is refreshingly affordable. Buyers searching for excitement no longer need to settle for mundane, boxy alternatives. The Renault 5 makes driving enjoyable again without breaking the bank.

However, there are a few bumps along this road. On a cool 50-degree Fahrenheit day, the real-world efficiency of the Renault 5 left something to be desired. During a blend of driving conditions, it reported an efficiency of only 3.1 miles per kWh. This translates to just over 161 miles on a single charge with the 52 kWh battery, a stark contrast to the claimed range of 252 miles. Yes, weather plays a significant role (especially in London’s chill), and had I tailored my driving for efficiency on calmer roads, I might have squeaked out a little more range. But let’s be honest, that’s still a disappointing drop.

Another aspect to consider is the thickness of the A-pillars, which can impede visibility at junctions, making it somewhat challenging to navigate tight spaces. Despite being compact by EV standards, it’s still larger than many small cars, so don’t expect to effortlessly maneuver through the tiniest gaps.

Now, how does the Renault 5 perform as an electric vehicle? In all honesty, it does what it needs to do. While the maximum charging speed isn’t necessarily impressive, this car is perfectly designed for urban settings and shorter trips. The regenerative braking system is subtle, so when you’re rolling through town, you’re not yanked to a stop all of a sudden—making for a smoother driving experience.

When it comes to real-world efficiency, yes, the numbers may not wow the savvy EV enthusiast, but it’s not dire enough for you to march down to the Renault dealer with a protest sign. It’s important to note that Europe still relies on Type-2 connectors, as they haven’t yet embraced the North American Charging Standard (NACS). First-time EV buyers will feel at ease with this vehicle; it doesn’t stray far from the familiar car experience, ensuring newcomers won’t feel like they’re missing out on what makes driving special.

To wrap it all up, the 2025 Renault 5 is an endearingly charming little car, well-suited for city driving, especially as temperatures dip. While the slower charging may require some planning for longer trips, it’s more than just a solid EV—it’s an enjoyable car in its own right. And let’s face it, with a competitive price, it’s hard not to get excited about what Renault has created. The buzz surrounding this little gem is undeniably real, and for good reason.

Alex Goy, a freelance journalist based in London, captures the spirit of driving with an appreciation for British sports cars, a steaming cup of tea, and the delightful thrill that comes from owning a British sports car—a sentiment many of us can relate to.
