This week at the 2024 Paris auto show, Renault unveiled the 4 E-Tech, an electric subcompact crossover.
The crossover is presented as a modern interpretation of the well-loved Renault 4. Earlier this year, Renault also introduced a revamped 5 electric hatchback, reinvigorating another signature model from the French automotive manufacturer’s history in the realm of electric vehicles.
The original 4, launched in 1961 and often called the 4L, was on the market for over three decades and came in several body variations, primarily as a four-door hatchback. In contrast, the new 4 E-Tech (with E-Tech denoting Renault’s electric vehicle line) will only be available as a crossover.
With a length of 163 inches, it is approximately 11 inches shorter than the latest Mini Countryman, yet it accommodates five passengers comfortably, along with almost 15 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk. The dashboard is equipped with two digital displays that function as both the gauge cluster and the infotainment system, which incorporates Google built-in features and includes a voice assistant.
2025 Renault 4 E-Tech
The 4 E-Tech is built on the CMF-B EV platform employed by the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance, which is also used in the 5 E-Tech. However, Renault’s adaptation of this platform is distinct, being a cost-effective variant referred to as the AmpR Small.
For the 4 E-Tech, Renault will provide 40- and 52-kWh battery choices. The larger battery supports a front-mounted electric motor that generates a peak output of 148 hp, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds. The smaller battery comes with a front-mounted motor producing 121 hp.
These batteries allow for DC fast charging, meaning that a charge from 15% to 80% can be achieved in approximately 30 minutes. With the larger battery, Renault anticipates a range of up to 250 miles on the WLTP testing cycle used in Europe, although this figure may decrease under the stricter EPA standards. Features like bidirectional charging and one-pedal driving are included as well.
The 4 E-Tech and 5 E-Tech are set to go on sale next year in the regions where Renault operates. An early reservation process has commenced at dealerships for those wishing to secure a spot for an initial production run.
