    Review of the 2023 Toyota Prius Prime: An Ideal Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle

    Since 1997, the Toyota Prius has been present, but its image as a “sleek” car has been challenging to attain until now. Toyota has shifted its focus to design over utility, and the 2023 Prius reflects this change by shedding its former uncool appearance and transforming into a vehicle that you’ll enjoy driving. The 2023 Prius Prime plug-in hybrid takes the Prius to the next level.

    The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid enhances the standard Prius with a larger lithium-ion battery and internal adjustments that increase its electric range to an impressive 44 miles. This is a substantial 76 percent boost compared to the previous Prius Prime, making it an appealing option for buyers in search of an extended electric driving span without committing to a fully electric car.

    Beneath the hood, the Prius Prime flaunts more power, being pushed by a 150 horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a bigger 161 hp electric motor generator. The hybrid system produces a combined 220 horsepower, marking a 100-horsepower increase from the previous generation, accompanied by a rise in torque rating from 105 lb-ft to 139 lb-ft. This results in a quick 0-60 mph sprint in just 6.6 seconds, a noticeable leap in acceleration for the Prius Prime.

    In all-electric mode, the Prius Prime can hit a maximum speed of 84 mph, with the top XSE and XSE Premium trims achieving a slightly lower 39-mile EV reach. Nonetheless, this represents a significant upgrade from the earlier Prius Prime, which was only capable of a 25-mile EV range. While the acceleration in EV mode may not be as forceful, the Prius Prime truly shines when both motors are active.

    The HV/EV Auto mode automatically triggers the engine when extra power is required, like when driving uphill. Once the battery is depleted, the Prius Prime smoothly shifts into a hybrid mode, akin to the standard Prius but with added power. In hybrid mode, the Prius Prime boasts an impressive combined 52 mpg.

    Charging the Prius Prime using a 120-volt outlet necessitates 11 hours for a full recharge, while a 240-volt charger cuts down the time to four hours. The top XSE Premium trim offers an additional 185W solar roof option, capable of supplying a minor charge to the battery when parked under sunlight, aiding auxiliary functions while driving.

    On the road, the Prius Prime provides a satisfying driving experience, swiftly gaining momentum from a standstill. Nonetheless, its light steering lacks significant response. The finely-tuned suspension strikes a balance between comfort and minimal body leaning, contributing to an enjoyable plug-in hybrid driving experience, particularly in urban settings. The Prius Prime provides three drive modes: Normal, Eco, and Sport.

    Externally, the Prius Prime maintains a close resemblance to the standard Prius, primarily set apart by the Prime insignia on the rear and its distinctive 17- or 19-inch wheels. Inside, the dashboard and seats feature red accents, amplifying the interior’s aesthetics. The SE trim comes with standard fabric seats, while the XSE and XSE Premium boast SofTex leatherette seats.

    Safety features include the new Traffic Jam Assist system that permits hands-free driving on highways at speeds below 25 mph. The system manages steering, braking, and acceleration, providing a more relaxed driving experience in congested traffic, with a driver monitoring camera ensuring attentiveness to the road. The Proactive Driving Assist system utilizes the car’s camera and radar systems to provide braking or steering assistance during curves or to maintain a safe following distance.

    The base SE trim level is equipped with dark grey 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen, fabric seats, rain-sensing wipers, and blind spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic alert. Front and rear parking assist with automatic braking is optional for an additional $35 on the base model.

    The XSE variant adds 19-inch alloy wheels, a heated driver’s seat, a digital key, SofTex seats, and a wireless charger. Optional enhancements for the XSE include a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen ($735) and a panoramic glass roof ($1,000). The top-tier XSE Premium features a JBL audio system, the 12.3-inch touchscreen, a panoramic glass roof, heated and ventilated front seats, a power liftback, and the digital key. Additional options for the XSE Premium consist of the solar roof ($610), a digital rearview mirror ($200), heated rear seats ($350), and the Advanced Technology Package Park and Panoramic View Monitor ($1,085).

    The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime SE starts at $33,445, including destination charges. The XSE Premium initiates at $40,265, and the XSE is priced at $36,695.

    With its expanded electric driving range, heightened power, and more stylish outer design, the 2023 Prius Prime is set to revolutionize perceptions of the Prius, making it a compelling selection for those in pursuit of a blend of efficiency and style.
