Volvo has five electric models planned, including a battery-operated alternative to the best-selling XC60.
This vehicle will be referred to as the EX60, following the approach taken with the XC90 and its electric counterpart, the EX90. According to Autocar, we can expect it to debut in 2026.
The EX60 will be the inaugural model utilizing a new-generation EV platform, which Volvo unveiled on Thursday as the SPA3.
The existing EV platform from Volvo is the SPA2, which was introduced with the EX90. The initial SPA platform was launched around ten years ago in the current XC90 and was designed for gasoline and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

The SPA3 platform will incorporate the same software systems and electrical framework as the SPA2 platform, referred to by Volvo as the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack. The difference with the SPA3 lies in its enhanced scalability, allowing it to be utilized in subcompact to full-size vehicles, Volvo indicated.
The SPA3 platform is also projected to bring forth mega casting, a manufacturing technique that replaces multiple body structure components with a singular piece. Mega casting decreases weight and optimizes the production method, and Volvo disclosed in 2022 its intention to implement the process at its Torslanda factory in Sweden. This facility is currently engaged in producing the XC60, and Volvo verified that SPA3 vehicles will be manufactured there.
Volvo is unlikely to phase out the XC60 with the launch of the EX60. The manufacturer announced on Wednesday that it has scrapped its goal of exclusively selling EVs by 2030, now expecting to continue offering gasoline and plug-in hybrid options until then. As a result, the XC60 will likely undergo design and technology enhancements to align with the EX60, similar to the recent updates made to the XC90 for it to be sold alongside the EX90.
