Maserati’s MCXtrema, a potent 730-hp supercar, is back in action on the racing circuit for testing ahead of the initial shipments expected in the latter part of summer 2024. With only 62 units of the MCXtrema planned globally, this track-only race car aspires to establish fresh benchmarks and push boundaries. Fusing the core of Maserati’s genetic makeup with cutting-edge high-performance elements, the MCXtrema is demonstrating its pioneering racing ethos on the racetrack, where experts are executing vital tests to optimize its performance. This distinctive creation by Maserati marks a daring progression from the MC20 super sports car that sparked its inception.
In February, the Autodromo Varano de’ Melegari (Parma) witnessed the premiere of the MCXtrema, with Maserati’s lead test driver Andrea Bertolini taking the helm. Bertolini, a celebrated driver with four world titles in the GT class, has played a pivotal role in enhancing the performance of the MCXtrema through the deployment of advanced simulation methods. The shakeout session in February and the subsequent rounds of testing have enabled the 730-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, derived from Maserati’s Nettuno engine, to unveil its maximum capabilities on the racing track.
The MCXtrema vehicle has been enhanced with state-of-the-art technology and gear. The Virtual Analysis unit has contributed significantly by leveraging advanced technology in the Maserati dynamic simulator. The Powertrain Calibration team has overseen the management of the substantial power generated by the Nettuno engine. The rigorous development journey of the Maserati MC20 encompassed meticulous component characterization and exhaustive engine bench trials, ensuring unparalleled precision in simulations. This methodology culminated in a high-performance vehicle that underwent extensive track evaluations, closely aligning with the simulator validations for real-world adjustments.
Extensive virtual assessments have been carried out on the MCXtrema, amounting to around 200 hours in the Maserati dynamic simulator and 1,000 hours of virtual analysis, in addition to input gleaned from track assessments. This combined effort, along with the thorough developmental work on the MC20 and rigorous engine reliability appraisals over the past four years, has given rise to a creation that epitomizes advanced engineering and innovation. The design brilliance from Maserati Centro Stile seamlessly integrates with the aerodynamic efficiency essential for a multitude of track layouts.
