Audi is on the brink of unveiling a new generation of its A7, which will once again include a high-performance RS 7 variant developed by the Audi Sport division.
Prototypes of the RS 7 in a new Avant wagon format have been sighted ahead of an anticipated introduction later this year or early next year.
The upcoming A7 lineup will continue to offer gasoline engines, with some models incorporating plug-in hybrid technology. The RS 7 is expected to be among those versions featuring an electrified powertrain.
While it was earlier speculated that the new RS 7 would utilize the outgoing RS 7’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine in combination with plug-in hybrid technology, Car Magazine reported on January 22 that the vehicle will instead be powered by a V-6 plug-in hybrid configuration.

As per the magazine, this V-6 setup is anticipated to power a new RS 5 as well, which is also undergoing testing. The RS 5 is predicted to deliver around 600 hp, while the RS 7 is estimated to yield closer to 725 hp. There are also reports of a more potent RS 7 Performance model, aiming for an output nearing 800 hp.
Output from the V-6 is expected to remain uniform across both models, with the electric component differentiating their respective power outputs. Additionally, the system will have the ability to offer a temporary 50-hp boost.
Audi appears to be preparing for a transition away from gasoline engines in the coming years, which might clarify the choice to omit the V-8 in the new RS 7. Utilizing a V-6 will also establish a link to Audi’s new Formula 1 power unit, which is currently in development for its factory team and will also adopt an electrified V-6 configuration. Audi’s F1 team is set to begin competing with this new power unit in 2026, coinciding closely with the market release of the new RS 7.
