Volkswagen is making waves again in the electric vehicle (EV) market, and this time with an ultra-compact, affordable model that’s likely to be named the ID.1. This car is set to be the spiritual successor to the e-Up!, a little city EV that captured the hearts of many in Europe over its decade-long run before its discontinuation in 2023. With the rising demand for budget-friendly EV options, the ID.1 is crafted to cater specifically to those seeking something economical and efficient without compromising on modern technology and better driving range.

So, what can we expect from the ID.1? Let’s take a closer look.

When it comes to design, the ID.1 will fall into the supermini hatchback category, and it’s expected to be a notch larger than the e-Up! The initial concept was supposed to draw inspiration from its predecessor’s design, but Volkswagen surprised us with the ID. Every1 concept, which showcases a fresh design language for the brand. It sports a smooth, friendly exterior without aggressive angles or overly bulbous shapes—think approachable, not intimidating.

The ID. Every1 concept stretches to about 152.8 inches in length, 58.7 inches tall, and 71.7 inches wide, making it a nice fit between the old e-Up and the upcoming ID.2 subcompact hatchback, which will boast even more space. For those comparing it to the discontinued Chevrolet Bolt EV, the ID.1 concept is 11 inches shorter, 2 inches wider, and 4 inches shorter in height. Keep in mind, though, these dimensions are subject to change for the final production model. The trunk space offers a practical 305 liters (10.5 cubic feet), a great feature for city living when you don’t want to sacrifice practicality for style.

Inside the ID.1, the design continues the trend of modern tech integration, featuring a compact digital instrument cluster and a prominent central infotainment touchscreen. This display seems to utilize a customized version of Rivian’s software interface, as Volkswagen teams up with Rivian to develop future EV software platforms. You’ll find several controls on the steering wheel as well as some physical knobs just beneath the main display for quick and intuitive access.

The ambiance is designed to feel spacious, with numerous storage compartments that include a central glovebox with a lid and additional spaces alongside it. Plus, there are door pockets at the front and a central armrest that adds another layer of comfort for both the driver and passenger.

Now, let’s talk about the all-important price tag. Volkswagen had initially aimed to keep this compact EV under $21,500 (€20,000). Post the ID. Every1 concept reveal, it appears the starting price for the production version will remain consistent at $21,500. This is encouraging news for those eager to own an affordable electric vehicle.

In terms of performance, the ID.1 will feature a front-wheel-drive configuration built on the MEB platform, the same as its siblings, the ID.3 and ID.4. The single electric motor will deliver around 94 horsepower, allowing for a top speed of 80 miles per hour (130 kilometers per hour). While this might sound modest compared to other EVs on the market today, it’s plenty sufficient to keep pace on Germany’s Autobahns without causing any traffic woes.

Volkswagen predicts that the ID.1 will offer a driving range of at least 156 miles (or 250 kilometers) on a full charge according to the WLTP cycle. That’s just shy of what the e-Up could achieve, but it’s worth noting that there could be options for a larger battery that would extend this range.

As for availability, the ID.1 is projected to kick off production in 2027 in Portugal. It seems it will primarily serve European markets, as Volkswagen positions it as “from Europe for Europe.”

Now, Volkswagen is a bit late to the game when it comes to cheaper EV options. Competitors like Renault are ramping up, with plans to revive their iconic Twingo as a four-door urban EV priced below $22,000 (€20,000) set for delivery in 2026. Stellantis, which controls several European brands, teamed up with Chinese manufacturers like Leapmotor to introduce competitively priced options around $10,900 (RMB 79,500) in China.

Then there are newcomers like the Chinese-made Dacia Spring and Citroen e-C3, alongside smaller models like the Citroen Ami and Opel Rocks-E. However, these are primarily quadricycles with limited seating, making them less ideal for longer journeys.

To expand its lineup, Volkswagen also has plans for the ID.2all hatchback, expected to be priced under $27,000 (€25,000) by 2026, which will boast an impressive range of approximately 280 miles (450 kilometers) and a quick charging times from 10% to 80% in around 20 minutes. With stiff competition already emerging, especially from the Renault 5, Volkswagen faces a challenge to regain momentum in the affordable EV sector.

In summary, the ID.1 represents a pivotal step for Volkswagen as it seeks to re-establish its presence in the affordable EV market. With a blend of modern design, practical features, competitive pricing, and reasonable performance, it promises to be a compelling option for city drivers looking for their first taste of electric mobility. As we approach the production years, it’s clear that the excitement for budget-friendly electric vehicles is just beginning, and the ID.1 could play a significant role in the evolving landscape of sustainable transportation.
